Russian Sub crashed in Sweden’s backyard during the Cold War…
⛵️ Sailing along Sweden’s southern coast into Hanö Bay where a Russian Submarine CRASHED in Sweden’s Backyard in 1981 during the cold war, and for a few tense days Sweden stood on the edge of war. In this episode, we mix sailing with storytelling — from history shaped by the Peace of Roskilde in 1658 to modern events that nearly sparked conflict. No drone shots this time (we’re inside a military zone), but plenty of sailing, scenery, and history along the way. ⛵️ We continue our sailing on the East Coast of Sweden and we use PredictWind Professional for our route planning. In this episode, we begin in Borgholm on the beautiful island of Öland. We explore the town, visit the ruins of Borgholm Castle, and take a bike ride through the meadows — and have a look at traditional Swedish Midsummer food. Then it’s time to plan our next passage. We show how we use PredictWind to check weather, routing, and local wind patterns before setting sail. We cast off, set the sails, and continue south — ending by sailing under the impressive Öland Bridge, which was Europe’s longest bridge when it was built in 1972, connecting the island to the mainland. We sail close-hauled and have great sailing where we really feel the Baltic Winds at 59°N, so this episode is all about the sailing! The day after Jeanette’s birthday Sail & Doxie https://www.youtube.com/@UCg3j6Cp-_RTS4JABFtgBDxA left the anchorage and we headed out at sea as well. Still haven’t decided if we will be at the same anchorage as Sail & Doxie or not for the next night. They are by the way sailing to the Meds and we are heading to Scotland this season. It’s a beautiful summer day, we take up the anchor, set sail 59°N, and then the rain came, and then some wind. Next day couple of days we will get are fair bit of winds as we are on a high reach in good winds constantly 20 knots gusting a bit over 30, it’s good sailing and feel the Baltic Winds and we need to push a bit to reach the island of Öland for our Midsummer celebration. We’re day sailing and each evening we tuck into a sheltered anchorage for a few hours of rest before setting off again at first light. Along the way we sail close-hauled past the deepest point in the Baltic Sea, you’d never guess the depth? Join us for this wet, windy, and unforgettable stretch of Baltic sailing.
